Molao Matters

Grantee / Botswana

Molao Matters mission is to make law accessible and justice attainable for all. The group believes that the bridge between the law and its subjects can be built by creating portals of access. It can be maintained by challenging attitudes of apathy and stagnation and strengthened through strategic activism. To their end, they hope to provide the necessary infrastructure that will see the realization of solid, strong and steady bridges. In acknowledging that justice and the law are sometimes inconsistent, the group aims to empower individuals, with a clear focus on those who are historically or systematically marginalized, and to ensure that equitable means are used to realize universal equality and dignity. They believe in Gloria Steinem’s motto:  “Law and justice are not always the same. When they aren’t, destroying the law maybe the first step towards changing it”.”

The group believes in the values of integrity, compassion, respect and legacy. Being a part of the Do It For Her movement with 18 other African countries is something that the group considers as one of their biggest achievements. Molao Matters implemented a workshop for all community members on gender based violence, the economic rights of persons in universal partnerships and spouses and access to the law. They engaged with a panel of various stakeholders including law enforcement, civil leaders, grassroots level activists, media, lawyers, the judiciary and medical health practitioners. To be able to conduct this workshop was done with no external funds and a very limited budget is an important accomplishment for the team.
