This International Day of the Girl, FRIDA celebrates the strength, clarity, and power that young activists hold. In the midst of a myriad of crises, political upheavals, and under the threat of genocide, young girls have continued to fight for not only their futures but a better future for all of us. This year’s theme, ‘The girl I am, the change I lead: Girls on the frontlines of crisis,’ is a timely reminder of the fact that girls continue to build the worlds they need, even in the midst of harrowing circumstances. FRIDA Grantee partners are no different. This year, we’re highlighting the work of a few Grantee Partners who continue to shift their communities.

The Hawa Feminist Coalition
The Hawa feminist coalition is a vibrant movement of women and girls, founded, in 2018 by young feminist activists under the age of 35. They work to promote the safety, equality, justice, rights, and dignity of girls and young women in Somalia, where women and girls bear an unequal brunt of hardships exacerbated by poverty, conflict, and religious and cultural limitations that promote strict male authority. One of their focus areas is movement building, where they mobilise, organise, and connect young women and girls in feminist solidarity to build a strong feminist movement within Somalia. They also work in leadership development, empowerment, and advocacy.

Girls Rights Club Mongolia
Founded in 2018 by an alumnus of the Princess Center’s Girl Leadership program, the Girls Rights Club is a girl-centred organization focused on building a non-violent society that values the rights of women and girls. They work to increase the political participation and awareness of young girls and recognise them for the leaders they are. They also work to empower girls to become leaders and human rights activists, enabling positive change within their community. Want to learn more? Watch one of their videos below!

Kambi Kakata
Kambi Kakata in Burkina Faso supports the emergence of resilient girls and young women within their communities. They work with young women between the ages of 10-30 to build leadership and advocacy capacity. They also empower young women with the aim of eradicating harmful practices against girls, such as early/child or forced marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM). Through their work, they promote and defend the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young girls and advocate for national policies that improve upon the rights and living conditions of girls and women.
We hope you’ll join us in celebrating #DayofTheGirl by continuing to support young feminist activists around the world, who rely on flexible recurring funding to create the radical feminist futures we imagine.
