September Photo of the Month

October 16, 2014 (updated July 15, 2020)

Our photo of the month from September is entitled “Scenarios”. It comes from the Sistah2Sistah Mentoring Program for Girls initiated by WOMANTRA in Trinidad and Tobago. They explain the story behind this action-packed photo:

We were all in a circle (mentors and mentees) and had to take turns running to a spot and freezing in a random pose, the last person then had to combine all the random poses and come up with a title to describe the scene. The girls got quite inventive with their names… the exercise was to show the girls how powerful images can be in the context of social media and sometimes the intended message is not always the one received, especially when consumed by multiple viewers.

Founded in 2011, WOMANTRA is a community of Caribbean feminists throughout the Diaspora who are committed to working toward gender justice across borders, To learn more about their Sistah2Sistah mentoring program, you can read this feature article from earlier this year. WOMANTRA has been a grantee partner of FRIDA since 2013.
