At this year’s AIDS Conference, held in Munich, Germany, FRIDA Grantee Partner, Purple Royale, shared their first academic report on safety and security for Trans and Intersex people in Zimbabwe.
“Transgender and Intersex persons in Zimbabwe have often been marginalized. The conversations on what it means to be born Transgender or Intersex were often unheard of. With this in mind, it came as no surprise that the Transgender and Intersex community often faced exclusion. In society, in families,in education sectors, in employment sectors, in the Human Rights framework, in the Development framework and within the private and public health care system.
In this regard, Purple Royale: Trans Voices Amplified, a community organization by the Trans and Intersex community for the Trans and Intersex community, decided to carry out a Nationwide Research on Safety and Security for Transgender and Intersex persons in Zimbabwe.
This research was necessitated by the gruesome, unjust experiences, we have encountered at grassroot, district, provincial and national level. Most of it undocumented, due to the fear of stigma and restrictive environment.
The research selected a sample of trans and intersex respondents across all 10 provinces, representative of Rural and Urban areas in Zimbabwe.
This report, unpacks our findings as well as recommendations, for a safer Zimbabwe that also takes into account, the needs of the Transgender and Intersex Population.”
